Medical Disclaimer

Nervous Body publishes general educational information about the nervous system and the body-focused habits that grow out of stress. This page sets out the limits of that information plainly, so you know what the site can help with and when to reach for a professional.

01

Educational information, not professional advice

Everything on Nervous Body is for general education. It can't account for your health history or anything a professional would learn by examining you, so please treat it as background reading rather than personal instruction.

Reading this site doesn't create any professional relationship, and nothing here should delay or replace care from a qualified provider. If a doctor or dentist has given you specific guidance, follow theirs.

02

When to see a professional

Stress habits are common and usually manageable, and many people ease them with calmer daily routines and some patience. A few signs, though, are worth taking to a professional sooner.

03

In an emergency

If you or someone else is in danger or facing a medical emergency, contact your local emergency number right away. In the United States that's 911.

If you're struggling with thoughts of self-harm, please reach out for help now. In the US you can call or text 988 to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, any time of day.

When to get help

Stress habits are common and usually manageable. Consider talking with a dentist, doctor, or mental-health professional if you notice any of the following:

  • Teeth grinding or jaw clenching that brings tooth pain or worn enamel. See a dentist.
  • Skin picking or hair pulling that feels compulsive or breaks the skin. A mental-health professional can help.
  • Anxiety that stays high most days or keeps disrupting your sleep. Talk to a doctor.
  • Any sudden, severe, or worsening symptom, which deserves prompt medical attention.
