Why it happens

Ongoing stress is the usual driver. When pressure keeps arriving and the system never gets a clear chance to reset, the baseline level of activation creeps up and stays there. Hormones like cortisol can remain elevated, keeping the body primed.

Because the system is already near its ceiling, small things tip it over more easily, which is why hyperarousal often comes with feeling that reactions are out of proportion. Helping the calming branch engage, through rest, slow breathing, and lower daily pressure, is how the baseline comes back down.

Left unaddressed, hyperarousal tends to be self-sustaining, because the poor sleep and constant tension it causes feed straight back into more activation. That is why gently and repeatedly engaging the calming side of the nervous system, rather than waiting for it to settle on its own, is usually what turns the pattern around.
