Adrenaline
Adrenaline, known in medicine as epinephrine, is the hormone that carries the fight-or-flight alarm through the bloodstream. Released by the adrenal glands within seconds of a threat, it lifts heart rate, opens the airways, and pushes fuel into circulation so the body can move. It is the chemical behind the pounding chest and unsteady hands you feel after a near miss.
What adrenaline is
Adrenaline is a hormone made by the adrenal glands, which sit on top of the kidneys. Doctors and drug labels usually call it epinephrine, and the two words name the same substance.
Its role is speed. A threat signal travels down the sympathetic nerves and reaches the adrenal glands, which release adrenaline straight into the bloodstream. From there it reaches the whole body at once, which is how a single startling noise can change your heart rate, your breathing, and your grip strength inside a second or two.
Cleveland Clinic describes the fight-or-flight response as an automatic cascade that readies you to confront danger or escape it. Adrenaline is the part of that cascade that travels by blood rather than by nerve, which is why its effects arrive everywhere together.
What an adrenaline surge feels like
The heart is the most obvious signal, beating faster and harder enough that people often feel it in the throat. Breathing quickens as the airways widen to take in more oxygen.
The less familiar effects are the ones that make a surge disorienting. The mouth dries out because saliva is deprioritised. Hands shake as blood shifts toward the large muscles and fine control suffers. Some people feel cold or tingling in the fingers, and a few feel briefly nauseated as digestion pauses mid-job.
Every item on that list is the body making a reasonable bet that you are about to need to run or fight. The discomfort is the cost of placing the bet quickly.
Why the feeling outlasts the moment
Adrenaline reaches the body faster than it clears from it. The trigger can be over in a second while the hormone is still circulating, which is why you can be perfectly safe and still be shaking several minutes after a car swerved near you.
Cleveland Clinic puts the usual return to baseline at 20 to 30 minutes after the threat has passed. That gap between the event ending and the body catching up is one of the most common reasons people conclude they are overreacting, when what they are actually noticing is normal clearance time.
Adrenaline is also only the opening act. Cortisol follows more slowly and keeps the body primed for a longer stretch, which is why a stressful morning can leave a residue that lasts into the evening.
Why it matters for stress habits
A single surge is a normal, useful event. The pattern that wears on people is many small surges arriving across a day, none of them large enough to name as stress, with too little quiet in between for the body to finish coming down.
That drip keeps the muscles slightly braced, and bracing is where hand and jaw habits find their opening. Many people notice that nail biting or clenching intensifies during exactly the weeks when small alarms are most frequent, though habits are multifactorial and arousal is one contributor among several.
If surges are arriving without an identifiable trigger, or bring chest pain, fainting, or a racing heart that will not settle, that is worth taking to a doctor rather than working out alone.
